Pairing the TE-D01i for the first time, the two earbuds powers on automatically when removed from the charging case and enter into pairing mode with white and blue LED indicator blinking in an alternating fashion. A simple search on the smartphone will allow one to find “AVIOT TE-D01i_L” or “AVIOT TE-D01i_R” and select either for pairing. The earbuds allow multi-pairing of up to 3 devices, this can be done by pressing the Multi-Function Button (MFB) two times consecutively on either side to pair with the second device, repeat the procedure if one would like to pair with a third device.
For playback functionalities, one could press once on the MFB of right earbud to Play or Pause the music, press twice on the MFB of the right earbud to go to the next track, and thrice to go to the previous track. To change the volume, press twice on the MFB of the left earphone to reduce the volume and thrice to increase the volume.
For voice-call functionalities, one could answer and end calls with a single press of the MFB as well as reject calls by pressing and holding the MFB for 1 second. On the aspect of voice assistants, one could enable Siri or Google Assistant by pressing and holding the MFB for 2 seconds.
Unlike the “Ambient Sound” feature found it most noise-cancelling TWS, AVIOT chose to implement “Ambient Sound Capture,” a new function that allows one to listen to surrounding sounds captured by an ambient microphone without having to remove the earbuds. The functionality is particularly useful in short conversations with service staff, or when listening for announcements when in transit. The mode can be enabled by pressing the MFB once to switch the Ambient Mic on and pressing the MFB again will switch the Ambient Mic off.
This implementation is interesting because earbuds do provide excellent sound isolation when one could get a good seal of the ear canal with the right ear-tips. As such, one can listen to the surroundings whenever one desires without compromising on sound quality often associated with noise-cancelling.
AVIOT has most recently released the AVIOT Sound XXX companion app, available on both Android and iOS platforms. The AVIOT Sound XXX companion app allows users to customise the MFB settings both the playback and voice-call functionalities. Other features including the selection of voice prompt under General Settings, adjustment of EQ settings as well as Firmware upgrade to keep the TWS up to date with feature enhancements when made available.
At the time of this review, the models supported include the AVIOT TE-D01g, TE-D01d mk2, and TE-D01i. AVIOT TE-D01i users outside Japan are advised to download the app to upgrade the TE-D01i to version 1.3 to allow enabling and selection of the English voice prompt in the General Settings. The current version of the companion app remains buggy with a significant amount of bugs and typos, which I have provided as feedback to the brand and is the main drawback of the product at this juncture.
With each earbud weighing in at just 6.1 grams in an ergonomically shaped design, the AVIOT TE-D01i is exceptionally comfortable with no fitting issues according to the feedbacks from 20 Singaporean female individuals whom I have approached to try on the TWS during the review period. Rated IPX5, the TWS is splash-proof and allows one continual experience without worrying about a sudden downpour and perspiration when working out.
On paper, the AVIOT TE-D01i is rated to provide playback of up to 8 hours on a single charge and up to 30 hours when used in combination with the charging case. During the review process, the TWS registered an average playback of 7 hours, 34 minutes, and 26 seconds using aptX as the Bluetooth codec at 50% volume and an average playback of 29 hours, 28 mins when used with the charging case based on the same parameters.
The Qualcomm QCC3020 Bluetooth SoC also supports the company’s TrueWireless Stereo Plus when paired with a smart device based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Series Mobile Platform. By connecting the smart device to the two earbuds simultaneously, the technology offers a superior listening experience aided by reduced latency and a further reduction in power consumption as a result of evenly balanced power distribution between the earphones as well as the elimination of cross-head Bluetooth transmission providing improved robustness of the signal to each earpiece.
When testing the AVIOT TE-D01i on the LG V40 ThinQ, which is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 platform, the average battery life increases by about 8 percent, registering 8 hours, 9 minutes and 16 seconds. In the area of audio latency, there was also noticeable improvement when the TWS is paired with an LG V40 ThinQ where latency was unnoticeable compared to the slight but noticeable lag when paired with the Huawei Mate 20 X.
