Qualcomm has announced a pair of new Bluetooth chips designed for truly wireless earbuds, the Qualcomm QCC514x and QCC304x SoCs. The new chipsets will support Qualcomm’s TrueWireless Mirroring technology for more reliable connections, providing integrated support for Qualcomm’s hybrid Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), voice assistants and premium wireless audio quality.
Aimed at further improving the robustness of connectivity, Qualcomm’s new TrueWireless™ Mirroring technology is designed to handle connections to a source device through a single earbud, ensuring that a pair of earbuds would show up as a single connection instead of the common L and R connection. The single connection would then be mirrored to the other to reduce the need for synchronisation. The system is also designed to support dynamic bud-to-bud role-swapping with Bluetooth address handover while also evening out power distribution between both earbuds which addresses the common issue of one earbud running out of battery before the other.
The new SoCs also features the company’s “hybrid ANC”, which is integrated into a single-chip solution, helping to reduce the complexity, cost, and PCB space of adding ANC to earbuds by eliminating the need for a separate ANC chip. Having this on the QCC304x SoC will enable future entry to mid-tier wireless earbuds with ANC while at the same enabling natural leak-through of noise to allow for awareness of surroundings, a feature similar to transparency modes found on current wireless ANC earbuds.
Between the more premium Qualcomm QCC514x and the entry-level Qualcomm QCC304x SoCs, the key differentiating element is related to voice assistant integration. The QCC304x offers push-button voice activation while the QCC514x adds the ability to always listening wake-word voice activation. Meaning to say you can say “Hey, Google” or “Siri” to wireless earbuds with a QCC514x chip without having to push a button for voice activation.
The pair of new Bluetooth offerings from Qualcomm will bring ANC and voice assistant integration to entry and mid-tier level wireless earbuds, features previously available only on Flagship models like Sony’s WF-1000XM3 and 1MORE’s True Wireless ANC.
